2025 AFTE John Wesley Fellows

A Foundation for Theological Education (AFTE) John Wesley Fellowships have been awarded to seven doctoral students.

The John Wesley Fellows program is designed to promote the renewal of theological education by supporting promising scholars in the Wesleyan tradition who are committed to the classical Christian faith, a robust Wesleyan understanding of Christian doctrine, and spiritual renewal of the Church and its people in service to the world. Scholarships are awarded to doctoral students to help them complete their studies. Recipients also participate in the Fellowship, which includes an annual Christmas Conference where fellows engage in scholarly conversation in service to the Church.

Christine Agina

Christine is a 2018 graduate of Kenyatta University with a BA in Education and a 2021 graduate of Asbury Theological Seminary with a MA in Intercultural Studies. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Intercultural Studies at Asbury, with a concentration in Evangelism.

Christine has served in mission work and church planting across Kenya, South Sudan, and Zambia, focusing on raising leaders through discipleship, evangelism and pastoral care. She is passionate about equipping pastors and Christina leaders to become faithful and discerning readers of Scripture.

Christine lives in Zambia with her husband, Silas, and their two sons, Jonathan and Joseph.

Noah Daniels

Noah is a 2018 graduate of Point Loma Nazarene University with a BA in Music and Ministry and a 2023 graduate of Northwest Nazarene University Master of Art in Pastoral Ministry. Noah is currently pursuing his PhD at the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies which is part of the Cambridge Theological Federation. Noah’s major field of study is church history. He currently serves as Associate Chaplain at Northwest Nazarene University and teaches in their School of Theology and Christian Ministry.

Noah and his wife Kerri currently reside in Nampa, Idaho.

Kenny Johnston

Kenny is a 2007 graduate of Trinity College with a BA in Philosophical Theology and completed his MDiv at Wesley Biblical School in Biblical Languages in 2020. Kenny is currently pursuing his PhD in Philosophical Theology at London School of Theology and Asbury Theological Seminary. His vocational plans include teaching and writing. Kenny also serves as the senior pastor at First Wesleyan Church in Gastonia, NC.

Kenny, his wife Julie and children Evangeline, Landis, Samuel, Abigail, Hailey, Jordan, Eliana and Clara reside in Gastonia, NC.

Cabe Matthews

Cabe is a 2005 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a BS in Physics and is a 2009 graduate of the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology with an MDiv. Additionally, Cabe is a graduate of the SMU’s Perkins School of Theology with a ThM. He will pursue his PhD in Philosophical Theology at the University of Aberdeen. Cabe currently serves as associate pastor at Kingwood Methodist Church in Kingwood, Texas.

Cabe resides in Montgomery, Texas with his wife Stephanie, and their two children, Annie and Joshua.

Emmanuel Shu

Emmanuel is a 2015 graduate of Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Systematic Theology and from Wesley University Ondo Nigeria with a master’s in Theology in 2021. Emmanuel in enrolled in his PhD program at Wesley House which is part of Cambridge University. He currently teaches Methodist studies and theology at the Presbyterian Theology school in Cameroon.

Emmanuel and his wife Kole, along with their children Bridney, Villan, Succes, and Uncion reside in Cameroon.

Fayiah Tamba

Fayiah graduated with a BA in Theology at Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary in 2015 followed by an MBA at University of International Business and Economics in 2019. Fayiah also received his master’s in educational leadership and administration at UMU Graduate School of Theology and Professional Studies in 2025. He will be attending Biola University to pursue his PhD in Educational Leadership and Administration. Fayiah also teaches discipleship and Christian leadership at Hope University and Theological Seminary located in Monrovia. His vocational plans include teaching, mentoring and providing leadership in theological education and universities.

Fayiah, his wife Jenneh and their children, Blesseth, Blessing, and Grace reside in Monrovia, Liberia.

Katarina von Kühn

Katarina graduated in 2017 from Baylor University with a BA in Religion followed by a MDiv from Duke Divinity School in 2020. In addition, Katarina graduated from Yale Divinity School in 2023 with a STM. She currently is pursuing her PhD in Theology, Ethics, and Politics at Princeton Theological Seminary. Katarina hopes to teach and mentor students in a university or seminary context.

Katarina lives in Princeton, NJ with her child Zooey.

1700th Anniversary of the Council of Nicaea

Prepare yourself for a gathering John Wesley Fellows and Friends of AFTE to celebrate the Wesleyan reception of the Nicene Creed and its spiritual heritage at Nicaea (modern Iznik, Turkey) and other locations relevant to the Seven Ecumenical Councils at the root of our shared faith. Join us in a pilgrimage tour walking in the pathways of apostles and praying in the basilicas of early bishops. The tour through lands of ancient treasures and Church history is scheduled for May 17–27, 2025.

2024 Christmas Conference at the Lanier Theological Library

JWF and friends of AFTE, we look forward to you joining us Thursday-Sunday, December 12-15, 2024, for the AFTE John Wesley Fellowship Christmas Conference at The Lanier Theological Library in Houston, Texas.  Conference panels and guest speakers will be centered on Faith Engaging Culture in Times Like These.  

Dr. Steve Garber, author of Fabric of Faithfulness, Visions of Vocation, and other works, will be one of our special guests in addition our worship times will include Isaac Wardell of Porter’s Gate, Mark Swayze of Bristol House, and Dr. Steven Newby of Baylor along with our fellows.  The conference is being co-hosted by The Woodlands Methodist Church and Baylor’s Truett Seminary.   We will share more details about our time soon. 

The Christmas Conference will begin with conference check-in at The Hilton Garden Inns on Thursday, December 12th at 3:00 p.m. and conclude on Saturday, January 13th at 3:00 p.m.   Please schedule your departure for no earlier than Saturday, December 14th 3:30 p.m. so that there is ample time to obtain transportation to the airport for travel home.  (If it is best to stay over Saturday night, your hotel will be covered.)

Once you have registered for the conference, hotel reservations with the Hilton Garden Inn will be made for you through the AFTE office.
